Graham and Satomi's Trip to Ireland and the UK in May 2003.

The initial reasoning for this was the IJET conference held in Dublin, and organized by JAT.

This page has a collection of photos in some sort of chronological order, but that is pretty well it.
Dublin

Arrival in mid may 2003, on a rainy Dublin evening, and checked into the Caulfield's Hotel on Dorset St.
A rough part of town, apparently, but it didn't appear too bad.

We went to Malahide castle, and enjoyed the lovely Irish weather. Note the name of the Knight. Named after the cider, maybe?

Christ Church

Next door is Dublinia, which gives a historical overview of the city, including fashions.

And then on to Kilmainham Gaol, central to large chunks of 20th century Irish history.
Also where "Name of the Father" was filmed.

A ferry ride later, we arrived in...

Liverpool
Satomi in Mathew street. Really. Look closely to the right. Liverpool a generally gloomy place, we thought. Therefore we will move on to the lake District.

The Lake District
Note the palatial dual carriageways characteristic of driving in Britain.

and scenery

And because
I am from New
Zealand, the
obligatory sheep
picture.
And a big slug.

Contemporary British Architecture.
Contemporary at around circa 2000BC.

In a pub in the Lake District.
Excellent bitter, and less than excellent lager.

On the drive from the Lake District over to York, we spotted Brougham Castle on the right, and dropped in for a quick stroll around. Most enjoyable.

. Inside. It is still possible
to go up 4 floors
and wander around
 the top.
  York
A breather
on the way
to the top of....

York Minster. My second time there, and still spectacular.
York. The place is a Shambles.
As is the name of this street.

The walls are still
standing around large
parts of the central city.

Clifford's Tower.

The Cotswolds
After this, then down to the Cotswalds, a  long drive, compounded by a Bank Holiday traffic jam on the M whatever.
Lots of pretty scenery and the sort of stuff that Japanese women go ga-ga about.

We stayed in a couple of nice little B&Bs.

Me researching things to do that day.

London
Then off to London. An excellent if spartan cheap hotel in Seven Sisters, 10 minutes walk from a street where pretty well everyone was Turkish. Excellent food.
Before that, we managed to check out a couple of the regular touristy things.
Tower of London:
Satomi the morning we left.

Sitting in Regents Park.

And then home. To a 4 hour drive in the middle of a typhoon up the motorway, to KY Heights, in the trusty "Honda Today Humming."
